I apologize for the length of this page, however, I share this information to allow you to get to know who is asking you to help spread abuse and violence awareness issues. My hope is that by the end of this page, you will know in your heart this book is importance to me.

Please excuse the grammar and spelling mistakes. I do not have an editor for this page, but I assure you I will have one for the book.

Dividers Pictures, Images and Photos

I am the mother of three adult children, and a grand-mother of seven children. I went from a childhood full of abuse into a 17 year relationship, chalked with heartache, betrayal, and overflowing with domestic violence.

Dividers Pictures, Images and Photos

Until I got away from my ex-husband, my motto was

After 5 1/2 years of alone time, I met a wonderful man who has helped me to gain dignity and some respect for the fine person that I am. He treats me like I matter. He has helped me to understand that I am a worthwhile person and he shows me that I am a lady who deserves to be loved. We have been together for 3 years.

I will soon be a published author of a book titled; Shadows of Silence. A book about abuse. Hurray!!!

Creating my book has blessed my life in many ways; however the greatest blessing I have received was an ability to embrace my life in a different and a more positive manner. My book has allowed me to step out from behind the Shadows of Silence that prevented me from speaking about what I have endured in my life. Along the way I learned some valuable lessons. The first is to never give up on your dreams because sometimes they do come true.

bigger Pictures, Images and Photos

The second was that by looking at the painful events from my past, my healing journey has began. I still have issues to look at and I still have some healing to do, but the important thing is that I am on the right road.

and chances are others will too.

I agree with the words in the song, "Unanswered Prayers" by Garth Brooks. If we pray and our prayers come true, then it is meant to be. On the other hand if they do not come true, it is for a reason. Sometimes we get discouraged when our prayers go unanswered, but then a time will arrive that you will actually be thankful that your prayer was not answered.

Due to the abuse I have been exposed to, I have built protective walls that have sheltered me from living life, which merely allowed me to exist. Slowly my walls are coming down and I am letting people get to know me so that I can get to know them too.

Betrayals and bad experiences led me to mistrust people in general. I have come to realize that the new people that enter my life are not the people from my past. The new people deserve my trust until, if they ever, give me a reason not too trust. If I had not learned this I would continue to carry on in the loneliness that I have become accustomed to. Being lonely does not bring joy.

Some information about me.

I do not ask people to agree or disagree with me, however I do need others to respect me for me. I live my life my way; you live your life your way.

I am not a religious person who attends church but I do agree with the phrase, Do onto to others, etc…

Serenity Prayer Pictures, Images and Photos

I can not recall a day where I have not said the Serenity Prayer. This is an easy prayer to remember. It helps me through each day, especially when I come across circumstances that I wish were different but there is nothing at that moment that I can do to change it. Believe it or not it helps me to be more accepting of whatever it is that upsets me. An example would be, I have to rely on others or on public transportation to get to the places I want to go. Right now, I cannot do anything about it but, hopefully, one day I will have my drivers license and a car. It will not be today, it will not be tomorrow, and it certainly will not be the next day, but one day. And until that day, I need to have patience.

Because I am somewhat of a perfectionist, sometimes when I set out to do something, such as a craft project, and it does not quite turn out the way I envision, I tend to get disappointed and frustrated. My boyfriend has been with me when this has happened. He just kind of looks at me and he will then ask,"Did you try your best?" I will say yes, Then he says, Well that’s all you can do. He has a motto, "Do your best. Be your best." For some reason, his words always come to mind and his words have helped me in many situations.

No matter what my day is like, when I retire for the night, I look for at least three positives things that happened during my day. The one thing I am certain of is that no matter how many horrible things happen in my day, there are always three positive things to acknowledge and to be thankful for. Sometimes I have to do some soul searching to find them, but they are there. They may not be a positive for another person, but they are my positives. I find focusing on the positive allows me to look forward to the next new day. If I am feeling down to begin with, mauling over my negatives will do nothing more than drag me down even farther.

If I am out and about, I try my best to do something nice for another person. It is the simplest task that can make another person smile or make their day a bit better. Carry their groceries, take out a bag of garbage, open a door, smile at someone, etc…

Most every day I start my day by doing some things for myself. Have a bubble bath or a shower, put on a bit of makeup, a bit of perfume, and paint my nails, curl my hair, then have my coffee or tea, and a little something to eat. I talk to my kids and/or my grandchildren, go to internet sites that provide inspirational messages. The one thing I do every single day with out fail is, I make certain at some point, I watch a 1/2 hour comedy program. It took me many years to learn this. I have spent far too many years crying, so I intend to spend as much of my remaining years, finding things to laugh at and to bring me some joy.

I try never to criticize, to put others down, or to say mean things to other people.

I try never to judge others. I have not walked in that person’s shoes, therefore I do not understand why he or she may have done something differently than me. I try to take an honest look at a situation to gain some type of understanding.

I do not give opinions. Sometimes I may say, “Well if it was me I would do this or maybe I would do that.”

I do not gossip. I will say, well they never did nothing to me, so I am not getting involved.

I will never break a confidence. The way I see it, if someone has put trust and faith in me, to tell me something they need to get off their mind, then, I choose to never let that person feel regret for confiding in me. Well I should not say never, there are two instances that I will break a confidence. One is if they discuss suicide and the other is if they are abusing a child.

I try to never take advantage or take someone for granted.

I will never do a task for someone unless my heart is into it. If I cannot do a favor willingly, or with-out being begrudging, I will not stress myself to do something and then carry the guilt or anger around because I did something I did not want to do.

Border Pictures, Images and Photos

I do not loan money with out looking at the truth. The truth being, when you loan a person money, there is a chance you may not get it back. I ask myself if my life will be difficult if I do not get that money returned.

signs of abuse Pictures, Images and Photos

Child and abuse should not be in one sentence.

What you are about watch, is an example of two people who knew that a child was being abuse. They did not make that crucial call. And now; they will deal with the consequences for the rest of their lives.

First Potential Lupus-Specific Treatment in Sight
BENLYSTA™ Successful in First of Two Pivotal Clinical Trials

Today, Human Genome Sciences (HGS) and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) announced positive results from a year-long clinical trial of BENLYSTA for treating lupus. When the 52-week study concluded, the lupus patients who were treated with BENLYSTA had improvement in overall disease activity without clinically significant flare-ups in one or more isolated organs when compared to patients who received the placebo (inactive agent). The patients receiving BENLYSTA also were able to reduce their intake of steroid medications. The study is the largest ever to be completed for lupus and the first Phase III (late stage) trial of a new biologic immune therapy for lupus to succeed in meeting its primary endpoint and most of its secondary endpoints.

Sandra C. Raymond, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Lupus Foundation of America (LFA) issued the following statement.

"For people with lupus and their loved ones, this is an historic day! With no new drugs for more than 50 years, since the Eisenhower Administration, the news today indicates that it is possible to develop new, safe, and effective therapies for lupus. We are greatly encouraged by the positive top-line data which shows that HGS’ 52-week BENLYSTA study met its primary endpoint. These results provide hope that this complex chronic autoimmune disease can be brought under control and that, eventually, a cure can be found for the estimated 1.5 million Americans and more than 5 million people worldwide living with lupus.

"We look forward to hearing the results, this fall, of a longer-term Phase III clinical study of BENLYSTA. The data from both studies will be evaluated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Should the FDA ultimately approve BENLYSTA, it would become the first drug successfully developed to specifically treat lupus since the disease was discovered more than a century ago.

"Lupus is a complex disease and not every therapy will be appropriate for all patients. Each person with lupus is unique and it is likely that successful management of lupus will require a number of therapies, perhaps used in combination with each other. The LFA and its Medical-Scientific Advisory Council urge the federal government and industry to greatly step up their research efforts on lupus so that physicians have a complete arsenal of therapies at their disposal to provide the individualized treatment that lupus requires.

"We are grateful to Human Genome Sciences and GlaxoSmithKline for their pioneering efforts to develop a new, safe, effective and tolerable treatment for lupus, to the physicians who have passionately committed to researching this disease, to the companies who continue to invest in finding new treatments, and to the thousands of people with lupus who have volunteered and participated in clinical studies over the years so discoveries such as this one could be possible.

"Meanwhile, the LFA will continue to implement its initiative entitled, A New 21st Century Approach to Lupus Healthcare, to ensure the ongoing advancement of the science and medicine of lupus to meet the multi-dimensional needs of people with lupus."

Watch the movie for FREE!

Exciting news!  The new version of Searching for Angela Shelton is now viewable for free on Snag Films.   There is code on the SNAG site so that those of you with websites or blogs can share the movie too. This is perfect for rape crisis centers and support groups who have sites too.  You have permission, share it!  Please help spread the word and rate the film and add comments. The reason I did this was so that all of those who cannot afford to come to an engagement or buy the DVD can view the film. The more people who heal, the more we heal the world.  Healing is an act of revolution and the more it is not about me or you, but us, the more we affect transformation in the world.  Everything you do affects everything else, so do well!  I’m working on practicing what I preach and although we could all use more money right now, I think a free film to inspire you is perfect timing!

New Searching for Angela Shelton DVD

The version online is the new version with never-before-seen footage! After being at so many QandAs, I was able to re-edit and answer a lot of the questions in this new version. The new DVD that many of you have ordered is the one with all the bells and whistles!  It has Spanish subtitles, closed captioning for the hearing impaired, a director’s commentary and a lovely photo album that plays with one of the amazing songs when you put it in your DVD player. Yay! I am signing the first batch too. When I get 40 more orders, I can ship them out so thank you, thank you, thank you for spreading the movie for free and telling your friends, fans, and followers to get the new DVD.

I love this new presentation!  I share my concept of trauma being similar to being pierced with a sword and take you through the process of acknowledging it, removing it, and then using the sword in your life with love. The best events are 1.5-3 hours long with a workshop. I just shared this with the SANE nurses in New Orleans and it was wonderful!  To bring me and my sword to your events contact my mom at

The Right Of Rejection
Leo Daily Horoscope
You may feel unsure of yourself and your path today, which can cause you to respond noncommittally to others’ requests for advice or aid. You may, however, find that you feel guilty saying no to those who approach you for favors. You will likely find relief from your uncertainty faster if you concentrate on working through your own personal and professional issues before endeavoring to help others. You should not take on a great deal of outside responsibility today unless you know that you have enough free time to do so without hindering your efforts.

Just as it is important to our well-being that we keep our word, it is important that we do not commit ourselves in ways that will interfere with our physical or emotional health. Many people are taught from childhood on that saying no to those who ask for favors or help is innately rude. However, the reality is that each of us has been blessed with a limited store of energy and a limited range of capabilities. When we learn to say no to those commitments that will prevent us from meeting our own needs, we ensure that we do not grow to resent the individuals benefiting from our efforts. Instead, we feel good that we were able to give some portion of our resources to others while still successfully seeing to our own concerns. You will be more amicable to the notion of making promises today when you accept that you need not make promises to all who petition you.

July 7, 2009 – Tuesday

Rod Robertson is hosting a Mystery Dinner/Silent Auction charity event for DREAMCATCHERS FOR ABUSED CHILDREN on August 7, 2009 in Lapeer, MICHIGAN at the American Legion Hall.
We are also planning an "ONLINE AUCTION" later this year for our members.  I am tenatively planning for sometime in the month of November as I think the items would make greatly Christmas gift possibilities.
So, donations will be used at either of these auctions!!!
All proceeds from the silent auctions will go directly to Dreamcatchers!!!

A silent auction can be an excellent way to raise money for an organization or an event. In a silent auction, items are donated from businesses and individuals. These items are then placed on a table for others to view. Bids are made by writing down a number and placing it in a container that rests next to that particular item. We simply look for anything that can be given up and that won’t cost you anything.

PAVE is both prevention and response based. We educate on cultural norms that encourage or trivialize violence while also creating grassroots action against injustices to victims and survivors.

Survivor Justice Outrage!
Gang-Rape Left Unprosecuted
ABC News has recently reported on a case from 2007 where three brave college-athlete women intervened at a De Anza Community College party to stop the gang-rape of an unconscious 17-year-old girl. Click here to read the article about the incident.
Despite having three eye-witnesses this case was not prosecuted by the district attorney’s office citing the victim’s lack of memory as a major road block. This ‘excuse’ is often used in cases where a victim is severely intoxicated or even unconscious. PAVE believes strongly that alcohol-facilitates sexual assaults should be vigorously prosecuted, especially in a case where such strong physical evidence and eye-witness testimony exists.
To voice your opinion, let the Santa Clara District Attorney Dolores Carr know that their should be no excuse for failing to prosecute the young men who so horribly violated this young woman (sample letters and talking points available from:

Child Psychiatrist Dr. William Ayers – Charged with Molesting Boys for Years!

A note to PAVE from journalist Victoria Balfour …

I am a New York City journalist who basically broke the case of a child psychiatrist named Dr. William Ayres in California who had been molesting young boys for four decades. I turned over my information on the victims, which they used for the search warrant to seize the doctor’s records. When Dr. Ayres was arrested, the San Francisco Chronicle said that had it not been for my investigative efforts, Dr. Ayres would not have been arrested,

The trial of Dr. Ayres is underway. I am not a witness for the prosecution and was told by the DA’s office that I would not be a witness for the defense. But when I arrived to cover the trial for a newspaper, the prosecutor was hostile to my presence and colluded with Ayres’ defense attorney to keep me out. It’s been a nightmare. The prosecution would not have this case had it not been for me and now they have betrayed me by not wanting me in the courtroom.
